ROBERT PHILLIPS

The metaphor of ‘the illusion’ is used by Robert Phillips to create objects that offer more than they actually possess. Whether the pure white surfaces of Formica or the natural complexities of hardwood veneer these surfaces, at their thickest 1mm, cover sheet construction materials such as MDF or plywood. The impossible steps depicted lead to impossible spaces both physically and perspectively.

Robert also makes sculptures that structurally repeat to form the sculpture itself; taking the Bauhaus philosophy of function defining form so often used in the utopic/totalitarian architecture of the 20th Century and turning it on it’s head, here function is undefined therefore the form must also be undefined.
